A Metric North Benchmark Study  ·  2026 Edition

The Small Business
AI Readiness Index

Everyone says they're "doing AI." Almost no one knows if they're actually ready. We built an instrument to measure it — strategy, skills, data, and budget — and turned it into a living benchmark. Take it in four minutes, get your score, and see exactly where you stand against the field.

73%of AI projects fail — almost always for lack of readiness, not technology.

The Brief

The AI conversation has a measurement problem.

Surveys keep asking business owners whether they've adopted AI. It's the wrong question. Adoption is easy — anyone can buy a subscription. Readiness is what separates the 27% of AI initiatives that deliver real returns from the 73% that quietly stall.

Metric North built the Readiness Index to measure the four things that actually predict whether AI will work for a business: a clear strategy, leadership and team capability, the data to feed it, and committed budget. The result is a single, comparable score — and a benchmark that grows sharper with every response.

The Instrument

Four dimensions. One score.

Your AI Readiness Score is a 0–100 composite. Here's what goes into it — and why each one decides whether AI pays off.

0130%

Strategy

A defined plan for where AI creates value — and where it doesn't. The single biggest separator between success and a wasted six figures.

0225%

People

Leadership buy-in and a team that can actually use the tools. Technology adoption is a human problem first.

0325%

Data

Organized, accessible information for AI to work from. Models are only as good as what you can feed them.

0420%

Commitment

Real budget and intent behind the initiative. Pilots without commitment are where momentum goes to die.

Every score lands on the climb:

Knowing your score is step one. We help you climb.

Metric North is Cincinnati's strategy-first AI consultancy for small and mid-size businesses. We turn a readiness score into a roadmap — and a roadmap into measurable results. No hype. No BS.

Methodology & data handling

The score. The AI Readiness Score is a weighted composite (0–100) of four dimensions: Strategy (30%), People (25%), Data (25%), and Commitment (20%). Strategy, People, and Data are measured with 5-point agreement statements; Commitment combines stated investment intent with current adoption stage.

Sampling. This is an open, self-selected benchmark of small and mid-size business leaders. Live figures reflect this study's respondents and are not a probability sample of all businesses. Baseline context figures are drawn from published 2025 national small-business survey data.

Your privacy. Your name, email, and company name are stored privately and are never shown on the public dashboard. Only de-identified answers (e.g., industry, company size, and your responses) contribute to the aggregate figures. One response per business email.
